Here's some background on SisterSpace's volunteer culture and what you can expect as a volunteer:
Sisterspace is planned and executed entirely by volunteers. Volunteering is a great way for women who want to have a positive impact on our Weekend community to meet new people and get more involved. Volunteers are expected to commit 12 to 16 hours of time working at the Weekend in exchange for a greatly reduced admission fee. Most positions will require you to arrive Thursday afternoon or evening, and some may require that you stay until Monday morning). Volunteers are also cordially invited to attend our worker-only "Thanksgiving get-together" Sunday evening after the close of the festival; it's a delicious way to relax and celebrate another successful Weekend with your fellow volunteers.
Volunteering can be hard work, and it's vital to the success of the Weekend. We need people who are truly interested in pitching in to make the Weekend function, and are willing to commit to showing up and fulfilling their role to the best of their ability. If your sole reason for volunteering is for the reduced admission, we strongly suggest that you consider applying for a scholarship instead.
So - let's recap:
- For most positions, volunteers are required to work 12 to 16 hours during the course of the weekend in exchange for steeply discounted festival admission, lodging, meals, etc.
- Volunteers contribute $110 toward their registration.
- Volunteers are not required to submit a $50 workshift deposit.
- Most positions require volunteers to arrive Thursday afternoon or evening, and some may require volunteers to stay until Monday morning.
- Volunteers are invited to attend our "Thanksgiving get-together" Sunday evening at the close of the festival.
Weekend Volunteer Areas
Below are general, rough descriptions of each volunteer area. Choose your top three options. After you pick an area, we will check to see if there are spots available. Once your area has been decided, you can then go ahead and register using the link on the volunteer email that will be following shortly. Registration for most volunteer areas will be $110.
Accessibility/Mobility (KM) - responsible for driving the golf carts that are available to shuttle people who need help with mobility.
Accessibility/General (CC) - being responsible for recognizing and addressing any issues that may arise concerning the ADA community. (This area is in the process of being recreated and expanded upon hence the somewhat vague description for now)
Art Shack (MR) - help monitor the art space and help out during workshops and projects, if needed.
Artist Liaisons (ML) - set up performer cabins (making beds, putting hand towels in bathroom, making sure everything looks neat and welcoming). Set up backstage area (decorate it, set up chairs and tables and mirrors, see to it that the artists receive any of their pre-requested special items). Make sure the performers know their schedule and help them get where they need to go and basically be comfortable
ASL Interpreters (JMc) - this crew depends on whether we have Deaf or Hard of Hearing attendees that year. Responsible for interpreting during concerts and some Workshops.
Bonfire (JMc) - make sure bonfire has wood available and keep it going if needed during the evening/night when people are gathered there
Business & Finance (KM) - n/a
Camp Cleanup (KM) - go around to the cabins in camp in a truck twice a day picking up and checking on trash/ recyclables
Camper Services/Radios (KM) - sit at informational table in main gathering building. Keep track of workshop, workshift and other schedule changes. Answer camper questions or direct them to person with answers. (Don't necessarily have to be a returning camper to be able to do this)
Community Safety/Security (KlM) - take shifts, esp during the evening and night hours, being on call for emergencies.
Dance/DJ (JMc) - n/a
General Store (ML) - sell store merchandise and/or run grill for fast food menu.
Hospitality (SY) - help greet people as they arrive at registration, hand out water and welcome gifts/packets, and get them signed up for work shifts.
Karaoke (JM) - set up the machine and run it during activity
Kitchen (ML) - work in main kitchen as prep, cook, or dishwasher. We always need cooks.
Laundry (JMc/ML) - on Sunday, take linens, blankets, comforters from performer cabins and do laundry at laundromat next town over. May also have to do kitchen laundry as well but that can be done during the day on Sunday on the land. We have a regular sized machine available. Money for laundromat provided for you.
Maintenance (KlM) - be on call if campers need assistance in cabins, restocking toilet paper, fixing stopped toilets, any small fix or assistance. (For bigger problems, the camp staff gets called back in)
Medical (KM/CC) - assigned shifts to be on call for medical emergencies
Merchants (JMc) - n/a
Parking (JR) - assist arriving campers with where to go for registration, where to park their cars and with getting their belongings into the shuttle
Pool (KM) - be a certified lifeguard
Send-a-Sister (AW) - n/a
Set Up & Breakdown (KM/JR) - arrive early Thurs morn, get supplies out of storage unit in nearby town and bring back to camp. Deliver supplies to areas and help out w assorted set-up tasks as needed. On Mon morn, collect supplies and return to storage.
Sexuality Space (KlM) - n/a
Sports (TS) - be available at programmed sports events to hand out equipment and if necessary, get people organized into teams and the games started. Make sure equipment is in accessible spot and organized for people looking for impromptu games.
Stage (JMc) - sets up and breaks down the performance areas, runs lights and sound and changeover during performances
Sweat Lodge (KM) - gathers wood to build the sweat lodge, helps construct/tear down the lodge, tends fire, the lodge, and helps participants, helps with opening and closing sweat lodge ceremony and blessing.
Transportation (JM) - shuttles campers and their belongings from parking lot to tents/cabins. Also runs into town on errands if needed, including picking up campers and workers from the train station.
Videos (GwM) - makes sure videos are up and running properly at their scheduled time
Volunteers (JMc) - n/a
Workshops (JMc) - makes sure workshop spaces are neat, greets presenter and makes sure she has everything needed. Keeps lists updated with any changes that may affect schedules.
Worker Support (LB) - help create a relaxing physical space where workers can unwind. Be responsible for distributing worker gifts, discounts etc and for worker support in general.
